Protective Orders in Virginia

Are you afraid for your safety — or the safety of your child? Have you been served with a protective order and don't know what comes next? Protective order cases move quickly, and the outcome can affect where you live, whether you see your children, and your rights for years to come.

I represent both petitioners and respondents in protective order cases, and I will make sure you walk into your hearing prepared, informed, and well represented.

Virginia's Three Types of Protective Orders

Emergency Protective Order (EPO) — Issued by a magistrate, often after hours. Lasts up to 72 hours.

Preliminary Protective Order (PPO) — Issued by a judge based on one side's account. Takes effect immediately and lasts up to 15 days, when a full hearing must be held.

Final Protective Order — Entered after both parties appear and present evidence. Can last up to two years and be extended in cases involving family abuse.

How I Can Help

Whether you are seeking protection or responding to an order, here is how I work:

1. Listen and assess. We start with a confidential consultation to talk through your situation and what is at stake.

2. Build your case. I will help you gather evidence, organize your timeline, and prepare for what the judge needs to hear — or challenge allegations that are exaggerated or untrue.

3. Represent you at the hearing. I handle the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court hearing and, if necessary, an appeal to Circuit Court for a brand-new de novo hearing.
